Southern and Northern ChinA

Introduction

Patrick: Hello everybody, Welcome to Folxten, Let’s Talk Hot, I’m your host Patrick. Today we are going to talk about the difference between the northern China and Southern China. When it comes to this topic, we can find differences between the North and the South in the manners and customs, the cooking culture, the way of communication and so on.

For example, as for the eating, in northern China, people are fond of pasta such as dumplings, steamed bun, noodles, steamed stuffed bun and so on for breakfast .But in Southern China, people like eating rice and drinking porridge for breakfast.

Why have the differences? As we know, because of the climates, in Northern China, the amount of precipitation is less than the Southern China. And in winter, the temperature is below zero. So the farmers plant wheat. On the contrary, in Southern China, the amount of precipitation is enough. And the temperature is above zero. So farmers could plant rice.

Hot Discussion

Louis: Hello everyone, I’m Louis, and welcome to Folxten, Let’s Talk Hot. Today, we invite Hazel to share some of her opinions and attitudes towards the differences between the south and the north in China. Hello, Hazel!

Hazel: hello!

Louis: Welcome to our studio, and please say hello to our audience and make a short self- introduction.

Haze: Ok. Hello everybody, I am Hazel from English class 1 in XTU.I am very interested in the studio Folxtenso I'm really happy to come here.

Louis: I am also happy to invite you. Hazel, I heard of that you are a southerner.

Hazel: Yes. I come from Changsha, Hunan.

Louis: Wow! Changsha is near to Xiangtan. Do you have the similar lifestyle?

Hazel: Yeahthe lifestyles in both Changsha and Xiangtan are briefly the sameand I feel accustomed to it  since I came here. Everything seems all right.

Louis: I envy you very much. Because I am a northerner and the lifestyle there is different from mine. Ok, let us begin now. In your viewwhat are the differences between the South and the north?

Hazel: Apparantlythere are lots of differences. For example, lifestylelike you  just talkedand habits, climate and So on.

Louis: You mentioned the eating habits. Can you give some examples?

Hazel: Of course. In my mind, the northern staple food is noodles while the southern staple food is rice. Besides, the rice noodle is a special snack in Hunan. almost everyone love itso it's usual to see that native people in Changsha get up early and eat a bowl of rice noodles for breakfast. However my classmates who  come from the north of China prefer  porridge and steamed buns as the beginning of their daily life.

Louis: yes, I often eat porridge and steamed buns for breakfast.

Next question: What do you think of the climate of the south and the north?

Hazel: I think the northern climate is dry while the southern climate is humidfor there are more raining days in South area.

Louis: Such is the case, when I got to Xiangtan the first time, I did not like the wet feeling. Many northerners think the southern winter is warm. How do you feel about it?

Hazel: Not reallymaybe it's a sort of misunderstanding. The winter in southern China is not only cold but also wet. What's more the wind is strong, which makes you tremble. DramaticallyMany northerners can't stand this kind of cold when they really come to the south.

Louis: It is November now. Many provinces are becoming cold in the north. Many people began to store Chinese cabbage and even bought 50 kilograms, which aroused a heated debate in Weibo. What is your opinion about it?

Hazel: When I saw the news, I was a little bit shocked, because southerners really don’t have this habit. As a southerner, I even cannot understand it. In the south, people can buy fresh vegetables every day for most cases. So we just buy a few vegetables which are enough to make one meal.

Louis: Ok! We talked about that you cannot understand people buy lots of Chinese cabbage just now. And which thing that you cannot accept most in the north.?

Hazel: I cannot accept the public bathactually. It sounds weird to me. And I really can't imagine that many people take a shower in a common place

Louis: Emm...I could understand your thought, because you have the private bathroom in general and pay attention to privacy. But in fact, the public bath has a big benefit. As we know, Northern winter is very cold .The public bath has central heating in order to avoid having a cold. Ok, next question: In your opinion, what are the differences between northerners and southerners?

Hazel: As for appearancenorthern men  are taller than southern men generally. In terms of characteristic, northerners are outgoing and enthusiastic. They like drinking beer and making friends, which make others feel frank. Southerners are in oppositethey are gentle and mild, which make others feel comfortable.

Louis: Ok! I will ask you the last question. If you have a chance to visit a northern city, where do you want to go? And why?

Hazel: I want to go to Jilin provinceJilin is famous for rime. I used to see photos of rime in geography book. It is very attractive. I've been dreaming to go to there to see the beautiful snow scenery.

Louis: Oh, I heard your description; I want to visit Jilin, too. Ok, our program is coming to anend. Hazel! Thanks for your coming.

Hazel: My pleasure.

Louis: And nice talking to you.

Hazel: me too.

Louis: China is a land of great resources .Every place has their own culture except the differences between the south and then north. We should seek common points while reserving difference and respect each other. Only in this way, can we live in harmony. That’s all for today’s Let’s Talk Hot; I am Louis, thanks for watching.
