China's "Double 11" online shopping day reverberates beyond borders

China's largest online shopping day that falls on Nov. 11 has evolved into one with global impact, providing foreign companies with an alternative to access the enormous Chinese market and consumers outside China with quality products at lower prices.

In Japan, many local businesses including Yahoo Japan, FamilyMart and Softbank have started to put on sale on Nov. 11 to coincide with the Chinese "Double 11" event, during which millions of Chinese shoppers spend large sums online for home appliances, clothing, luxury goods, among others.

Singles Day is a big occasion for consumers and businesses in China and has the potential to give the products we offer more exposure and provide another opportunity to test demand for our brand," Nigel Roberts, a Waitrose manager, was quoted as saying.

On the consumer side, the massive promotions by Chinese e-commerce operators at around Nov. 11 have also offered overseas shoppers strong incentives to spend.

China continues to be active player in climate talks: Chinese delegation

China will continue to be an active player in climate talks and its policies will not be affected by any external changes, a Chinese negotiator at a UN climate change conference said here Friday.

Chen Zhihua, a member of the Chinese delegation and an official of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks on the sidelines of the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) held in the Morrocan city of Marrakesh.Whether the United States will withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who vowed to cancel the agreement during his campaign, takes office in January, Chen said now isn't the right time to assess it.

"We still need to wait. No matter what happens in the new U.S.government, China will continue to constructively participate in the international climate change process," said Chen, adding that global efforts to curb climate change will not stop.Even if the United States withdraws from the agreement, cooperation between China and the U.S. will continue, Chen said. "This is the attitude we hold toward the matter."

Shanghai will implement stricter tobacco control rules, banning smoking in all indoor public places, workplaces and public transport from March, 2017

The standing committee of the Shanghai People’s Congress, the local legislature, on Friday passed an amendment to existing smoking control regulations that took effect six years ago. While the existing version allows designated areas for smokers in indoor areas of hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, as well as airports, train and port stations, the amendment closes such loop holes. In addition, smoking will be prohibited in outdoors at certain public venues visited by children, including schools, after school educational institutions and children’s hospitals. Outdoor auditoriums in stadiums are also subject to the ban China has 316 million smokers, with another 740 million exposed to second-hand smoke. In2015, about 733,000 Chinese were diagnosed with smoking-related lung cancer. At least 16 Chinese cities, including Beijing, have passed their own tobacco control rules.

Business leaders from more than 1,500 education and technology enterprises gathered in Beijing on Friday to attend the 2016 Global Education Technology conference.

This is the second time that the three-day event for education and technology business leaders to exchange views and ideas has been held. It was launched in 2015 by jiemodun.com, a leading media plat form that provides information and service on education technology and innovation. The theme of this year’s conference is ”action, version and the new norm.” Mei Chujiu, founder of jiemodun.com, said the coming decade would be both meaningful and fruitful for China’s education sector. Changes in the market, technology and policy have transformed education in China, and data processing will become an increasingly important tool, she said. Mei dismissed the so-called cold winter of capital that has hit a number of education technology enterprises since the fourth quarter of last year, shuttering many. ”I don’t believe it’s a real ‘cold winter’, “she said, adding that the history and experiences of other countries show temporary blips in the market can be overcome.
