1.    Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

In 1953, then U.S. President Dwight Eisen hower in a speech to the UN General Assembly proposed the “Atoms for Peace” program, including the establishment of what would become the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, to facilitate the exchange of nuclear technology for peaceful uses and safeguard against their diversion to weapons.Since that time, the United States has been a leader in international civil nuclear cooperation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. It is the single largest contributor to technical cooperation activities of the IAEA, helping Member States apply nuclear technology to address national development needs. The assurances provided by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency have helped make today's vibrant exchange of nuclear energy, science, and technology possible. On May 9, the U.S. delegation delivered its statement on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy to the First Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

2.    Newly- elected President in France

In Germany, newspaper headlines read “It's a boy”... “The winner is Europe.” Some commuters reacted with relief while others were less overjoyed that Emmanuel Macron was the only alternative. "I think it's sad that it had to be decided like this because Macron wasn't who everyone wanted to vote for. But for Europe it's a good thing, and thank God it's not Le Pen," German Chancellor congratulated Macron personally by phone.

“Emmanuel Macron carries the hopes of millions of French people and also of many people in Germany and the whole of Europe. He ran a courageous pro-European campaign. He stands for openness to the world... and firmly behind a social market economy,” "The result [of the French election] shows that a unified Europe, a developing Europe, a safe Europe based on principle values, based on human rights, has a future,” At a campaign event in London, British Prime Minister urged voters to allow her a Macron-style mandate to strengthen hand in the Brexit negotiations.

“We must make sure that in the U.K. we also have a strong mandate to take a strong position into our negotiating table,” she said. The newly- elected president won 66% of the vote, but the big challenge lies ahead for someone who was relatively unknown to the French public five years ago.
